If sorry is one of the hardest words to say in life, then congratulations is its equivalent in the world of Italian football. So much so that after the Serie A race went right down to the last 45 minutes of action, Daniele De Rossi opted against showing some common courtesy by not praising Inter, but taking another swipe at them.

One can understand the Roman’s frustration, yet it would have been better for everyone if he’d kept quiet. After all, he’d already made it quite clear earlier in the season that he believed the Nerazzurri had been aided by some questionable refereeing decisions. There was no need to fan the flames yesterday afternoon, especially after his own side didn’t even collect the result they would have needed at Catania.

While De Rossi is right to highlight that there was a stage in the campaign when inadequate officiating seemed to benefit the Milanese, his accusations of a falsified championship have done nothing apart from underline the suspicious nature of a country whose national game was ripped to pieces by the Calciopoli scandal.

It would be naïve to not only believe, but suggest that Inter didn’t deserve the title. They had the strongest squad, the best goalkeeper in the League this season, power throughout the side, a Coach who was right to gamble on Mario Balotelli and Zlatan Ibrahimovic – a player who isn’t given the widespread respect that his ability deserves.

Roma undoubtedly played the most attractive football, but where did that get them against the likes of Livorno or Siena? And let’s not forget the two League games between the title contenders this term. Roma committed footballing suicide in the first when they were comprehensively trounced, while they put too much post-match emphasis on Philippe Mexes’ dismissal in the return game which ended 1-1.

It’s easy for neutrals to dislike Inter – you’d only need to read, watch and listen to the Italian media for a few days – but there does come a point when one has to be big enough and pay homage to the champions. If De Rossi wants his Roma side to compete next season, then he needs to stop pointing the finger and start accepting responsibility for his own side’s shortcomings. The best way to begin would be by saying sorry and congratulations.
